KATO
We support the attempt of Mr. Grabbe, who suggested a new, useful Amiga hardware. This suggestion isnt new, but after the planless acting of AI, where even 5 years after CBMs bankrupt nothing happened (hardware), nonetheless actual. The big problem, which prevented us from integrating the Amiga into a standarized platform via slot card until now, is the problem with the drivers for plugin cards and on-board hardware. In the opposite to the name owners, who constantly states he doesnt need third party developers, we know that they cant make it on their own. Another problem is the Amiga Community, which can only be filled with enthusiasm for completly illusoric projects. Its not practical to try to compete with SGI, Sony or Apple, which are calculating millions of sold systems. Otherwise homecomputermainboards are classified to be useful enough to use modern RISC CPUs. The result are the well known "impotent" tower solutions. CPU top....envoirement flop. If there should be amiga developers, which dont want just want to tap money, they should use standard hardware. In the first point this would be a usual mainboard (Athlon/AlphaII) or a PPC-mainboard (IBM/MOT). Katodev has access to a bridge, which is used as adapter to use cards, build for 030 Macs, in PCI machines. The license fees should be really low. This would be a basis for a minimal Amiga mainboard without CPU, something a british company was unable to do. Amiga-floppy and sound would be 100 % compatible, the 68k would get emulated, for example via UAE, which is ,with a decent CPU, already fast enough. Everyone who wants cooperate with us, and Mr. Grabbe, should contact us. There are no detailed infos or product-announcements for end-user.

Show report Pianeta Amiga '99 by Thomas Steiding
Thomas Steiding by Epic-Marketing has attended the show, and summarised his impressions for us:

The third Pianeta Amiga took place in the small "exhibition hall" of the small city Empoli near Florenz. On both days, roughly 2500 Amiga users attended the show. According to officials, there were only 25 visitors less than last year. The nice thing with the Italian show is you can simply sit down on the grass outside of the building, enjoying the sun.
About the exhibitors: These were less than last year. At the Amiga Int. booth, aside from A1200 for special pricing there was Ami-Cola to be enjoyed and fashion trends to be followed (Boing Boxershorts).
Haage & Partner, at the NonSolo Soft booth, mainly presented AmigaOS 3.5. Naturally there was always a lot of people at this booth. The final version is scheduled for release early October.
At the booth of Power Computing, you could purchase accelerator and interface boards. Additionally, the new strategy game Red Mars was presented. A talk with Toni Ilinari revealed that the game Golem was cancelled.
At the joint booth by Epic Marketing and Darkage Software, several games were presented, like VirtualGP, Tales from Heaven and the PPC version of Eat The Whistle. Additinally, the effects software Extreme and the Darkage Developer CD were presented.
Main attraction at Virtual Works was the beta version of Wipeout 2097, which should be in the production by now and available soon.   At Innovative (?), the latest Vapor products (Voyager 3.x, Microdot etc.) were available.   Additionally, the latest Amiga print magazine Enigma Amiga Life was to be appreciated, appearing in its first issue at the show. The magazine is distributed by Italias largest distributor for computer magazines, however they did not yet know about Collas leaving.
A new innovative product is Amiga IT, an HTML magazine based on CD-ROM. The developers are considering German and English versions. The first issue has many great programs and Quake AddOns, like e.g. Quake Rallye.
In the non-commercial hall, user groups and developer teams met, informing the public about their actions. The game Bubble Heros was on show, an innovative and addictive guessing games bound to be released by Crystal Software. Some demo coders showed what great effects can be done by the aging AGA chips. The hall was under the special motto Meet and Greet.
On Saturday evening, there was a short press conference, with about 500 people attending. Petro Tyschtschenko, obviously exhausted by the ongoings of recent weeks, showed some videos from the Amiga past. He was unable to comment about the future, everything was unclear again, but that's familiar to us Amigians.
Impressive for a German like me was the relaxed atmosphere of the show, perfectly reflecting Italian lifestyle. All in all, a nice experience.
Thomas, many thanks for your report, giving us a good impression of the show. (ps)

AmigaOS 3.5 - A Point Of Criticism
At the title link, Andreas Frank explains (German, sorry) why he doesn't agree with the 2:1 ratio.

The following eMail was recieved concerning the topic, written by Andre Dörffler:
My name is Andre Dörffler, and I am working for Haage & Partner. You might have to rename the article AmigaOS 3.5 - A Point Of Criticism in:
Kickstart 3.1 - A Point Of Criticism
Since the criticism is about the window borders hardwired into the Kickstart 3.1. Since the Kickstart is not updated, but only the OS, it is not possible to change the window borders or system symbols. That would only be possible with a patch, which does not belong to an OS update because it is a HACK, and not system friendly.
Thank you for the clarification. (ps)

Not so good, however, is the sorting of the found websites; e.g. amiga.de was not listed among the first 100 entries... the super-fast locating of sites is of little use if the most important sites are listed among "others"...

IMP Project News
IMP news again: Now we re cooperating with the AROS team to ensure IMP not becoming a "LINUX Distribution with UAE" ,as some people said before, but a system with a real "AMIGA Feeling".
More important is the open source thought behind the project. In the meantime we contacted Fleecy Moss and the Phoenix Consortium. Whereas Fleecy supports our engagement, the answer from the Phoenix Consortium is still overdue. We re not against Phoenix and we re happy about every alternative to the "future plans" of Amiga thats capable of being spread. So our LINUX choice as developing envoirement is not final in anyway, its just a base to start the multi-platform developement.

More rumors. An article speculates about a cooperation between Amiga and IBM. Another potentially major customer is Gateway Inc. A deal with Amiga would be a boost to ITG's plan to enable "pervasive computing." Gateway already has a cross-licensing agreement with IBM, but Gateway officials wouldn't say what the deal covers. Neither party would comment on a potential deal with Amiga.

Heise: USA: Unlimited Crypto-Export Possible
Heise writes:
Following the announcement, US export restrictions on cyptographic software will be softened, the Clinton gouvernment has now released details. According to the information given, US developers of cryptographic software can now sell it virtually unrestricted to other countries. So far, the maximum key length was limited to enable gouvernmental authorities to crack encrypted messages. This restriction has been removed: Software with keys up to 64 bit does no longer need to be registered; software with stronger (longer) keys can also be exported, however it has to be presented to the gouvernment for checking. Full article (German) at the title link.

PC-Welt also reports: USA softens crypto export regulations
PC-Welt writes:
Starting immediately, cryptographic software with arbitrary key length is allowed to be exported from the USA. Only seven countries are exceptions, since they, in the eyes of the US gouvernment, support terrorism.

New Trojan Virus Appeared
A new trojan have been found on Aminet today. But it has been removed, but this might have been spread, so take care...
The trojan will after it has been executed, replace the 'c:loadwb' with a new 'loadwb' with the size of 84.772 bytes, and create a file in your wbstartup drawer called "Workbench" (size 40.668 bytes, packed), and now the trojan is ready to 'play' with your Amiga. You can find this textstring in the file:
GuRuX mEdItAtIoNz: [JoShUa`S tRoJaN]`/AdDrEzZ: [yOuR ComPuTeR]
  TaZk: [SyStEm KiLlEr]
  MoRe iNfOrMaTiOn: censored
This trojan is made with AMOS, and it is a lame trojan.....
Here is some info about the archive:
  Name : New msx-2 Turbo R emulator
Trojan name : Amos Joshua Trojan
  Archive name : msxR.lha
  Archive size : 124.196 bytes
  Trojan name : msxR.exe
Trojan size : 128.800 bytes (144.320 bytes unpacked)
  Short desc : New msx-2 Turbo R emulator for 030 040 060

Petro Tyschtschenko by phone
What does Petro say about the situation?
Yesterday, I talked to Petro on phone, and I want to thank Petro for taking the time answering some questions. Of course I asked him first about his judgement of the situation. I will try to say in my own words what Petro said about it. Collas resignment came as a surprise for him just like for us. He wouldn't comment on the background, but it became clear to me that he very much regrets Collas leaving.
He could not deny that the current situation in the US is rather nebulous. However he expects a more precise statement to come sooner or later.
I further asked him about the rumors that even OS3.5 and the Cologne show are jeopardised. He clearly denied this, however. OS3.5 will be available by end of September 99 as promised, and AMIGA will attend the Cologne show. Petro assured me that he will be trying everything he can to clarify the confusion, but things have to settle first. He will try to make our position clear. "I am used to critical situation, we will overcome this one, too". And he is probably right with this, because things will always go on somehow.
Petro has postponed his appearance at Giga, since he has much work to do with meetings and talks, and has to get a clear picture himself first.

AMIGA-CTO Dr. Rick LeFaivre: AMIGA stays on course (14.09.99)
-------------
Our co-worker Martin Henke, who translates AMIGA aktuell to English every month, has just called Dr. Rick LeFaivre, Chief Technology Officer of AMIGA, and talked with him about the current situation and future of Amiga, which he summarizes as follows:
"The Executive Update by Tom Schmidt has agitated many. This agitation is unnecessary, however. As Dr. Rick LeFaivre assured be in a phone call today, plans have not been changed. AMIGA continues development of the new AmigaOE. However, AMIGA will not build own hardware, but there are contacts to companies on this topic. Details about which companies there are have not been given, however."
Personal summary: By this time, I am under the impression AMIGA President Tom Schmidt does hardly know the plans and work of the development department. If you believe Dr. Rick LeFaivre, there are hardly any changes at all apart from the Amiga MCC not being produced by AMIGA themselves, but by partner companies. Another Executive Update clarifying the obvious misunderstandings seems to be necessary.

Also see the Open Letter to Tom Schmidt.

PHOENIX PLATFORM CONSORTIUM
Today, I phoned Marc Albrecht and asked for clarification about the idea behind the founding of the Consortium. He kindly summarised his thoughts and suggestions for us as follows:

Phoenix is not a miracle cure. The market power destroyed by Amiga Inc. in years gone by cannot be reestablished by Phoenix in any short time.
But the assembly of developers and marketing people under the "Phoenix" banner has a clear goal as well as hard results to offer - other than Amiga Inc, which jumped from one virtual goal to another.

  a) Phoenix will create a system that integrates the "Classic" Amiga from the start. There will be a viable path to new platforms, the "compatibility" for existing hardware is not implemented afterwards, but is the seed.
  b) Phoenix will create a system which will be portable from the start thanks to the Neutrino core. So, PPC platforms can be served as well as Intel platforms. A wedding with some MCC is not necessary - but possible nevertheless.
  c) After just some days of official existence, Phoenix has already gathered all important Amiga application developers as well as some leading hardware developers. This way, there is know-how of the "Amiga Spirit" (whatever that may be) that can hardly be surpassed. If there is talk about an Amiga rebirth, it is by people who shaped today's Amiga - not managers that have to do reading about the matter.
  d) Phoenix is home for enough high-ranking software developers to make real applications available on a completely new system in a meaningful timespan. By embracing the "Classic", the number of applications can and will be maximised.
  e) Phoenix is no weird idea with all components yet to be developed - since the basic components like QNX (Neutrino), Rebol and others already exist, and are successful. This is not describing fantasy but reality.
  f) Phoenix already made contact to leading hard- and software manufacturers to present results in the shortest possible time. The names of companies involved are not "top secret" like elsewhere, but can be fount in the supporters list.

I am a very sceptical man myself, and usually wouldn't have my name added to the Consortium. The following points convinced me to put energy in this project:
  • no wedding with some limited platform (like Amiga Classic), but using the existing, expanding, and promising kernel from QNX
  • I prefer a real-time system from one manufacturer over the compilation of thousands of developers worldwide
  • extremly tight schedules for realization of results (announcements are made true in weeks, not years)
  • no fantasy products, but using existing technology like QNX, Rebol, probably ARTAS
  • realistic plans "behind the scenes", means: real plans building upon Phoenix' results

Please understand I am unable to answer private mail on this topic - reasons for this are solely due to schedules, I have too many projects running to write mails right now.

new Project: IMP - Amiga as Open Source
Volker Mohr writes:
Some days ago, when Jim Collas (was made) left, I suggested to find a sollution saving the Amiga plattform as Open Source, even if the people at Gateway have different opinions of the future, or worse still, none at all.
My original suggestion was using CHRP as hardware basis for new computers, simply because being independant from a single manufacturer of hardware. As OS, a specially modified and expanded version of an Open Source OS (Linux or a BSD) could be employed.
Aside from criticism, I recieved much more support, have been contacted and mailed if I mean it seriously and how it could be done.
A team has slowly emerged, which started a project with the preliminary title "Project IMP" (Independent Multimedia Platform). First ideas and plans have been collected by me in recent days, and released at the title link.
If you want to participate, have own ideas etc. please contact me. Since we only have a chance if we make it public, I decided to to so after talking to two other team members. I think it's about time to take our favourite computer's fate into our own hands, and save what can be saved :-(

It's not only extremely fast now, but also quite compact: the 8 players (4x68k, 4xPPC) have been merged into now only 2 remaining executeables, which brings the archive size down to only ~120 KB. Looping now is possible as well.
There also shouldn't be (m)any bugs left ;) Download: akMPEG2.lha

Amiga Aktuell
Is the AmigaNG coming or not?
In his Amiga Aktuell Special, Carsten Schröder writes:
So far, the article from Businessweek Online, which drew so much attention recently, has neither been confirmed nor denied officially. Several sources, however, indicate that an official statement by AMIGA is planned for this Tuesday. Meanwhile, Stuart Walker of the programmer team Digital Images, which already has announced games for the Amiga MCC, is cited by a Gateway employee: "I am going to wait until we hear some news from within Amiga. I was told that the AmigaMCC was definitely going ahead". Shortly after Jim Collas resigning as AMIGA President and CEO, Digital Images had canceled Amiga MCC game development, only to take back this descission a short time afterwards.
Bottom line, confusion is perfect. We will have to wait until Tuesday, to recieve clarification (at best) about the AmigaNG future.

Version Watch Offline... for duration?
I am frustrated. I am angry. I feel really sick about the ongoings - or lack thereof - at Amiga Inc.
And I don't see any sense in investing considerable amounts of time in this Amiga-related project right now.   The Version Watch will be down until further notice. The only Amiga-related activity I will currently maintain is my work at amiga-news.de. If things brighten up at Amiga Inc., I will reestablish the Version Watch.

Is the Microsoft Console coming?
Spiegel Netzwelt writes:
According to rumors, Microsoft is currently working on its own game console, which is reported to be similar powerful than Sonys announced PlayStation 2.
The software company Microsoft is reportedly working on a game console code-named "X-Box". The TV expansion is meant mainly for games, but could have other functionality, too, reported US game magazine Next Generation in its October issue, citing unnamed sources.
According to this article, the console will either run on a 500 MHz chip by Intel or an Athlon chip by AMD, with gfx technology provided by nVidia. As operating system, a modified version of Microsoft's Portable-System Windows CE will be employed. With this setup, the Microsoft console might be comparable in performance to Sonys announced Playstation 2, the article sais. As manufacturer for the Microsoft-designed console, Dell and Gateway might be possible partners. (Full article - German - at the title link).

Thomas J. Schmidt in Executive Update
Dear Amigans:

I wanted to make sure everyone knew that Jim Collas has chosen to leave Amiga to pursue
other interests and opportunities. I would like to personally thank Jim for the leadership
and vision he brought to Amiga and the entire Amiga community over the past eight
months. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors.

I have been with Amiga since April of this year as the Chief Operating Officer and I
continue to be extremely excited about the plans and strategies we have been working very
hard on the past several months. Those plans will continue with a great business and
technology leadership team focused on the emerging Internet Appliance market space. As
we finalize our plans in this area, we will communicate those to the community.

I would also like to thank Bill McEwen for his many contributions to the Amiga community
and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Bill has been a steady and calming
voice to the community.

Zune - Open Source Reimplementation of MUI
Zune is a project to reimplement Stefan Stuntz' MUI as Open Source. To achieve this, the project makes use of the API and the freely redistributable includes of the MUI SDK only. The project is based on the LPGL.
Currently Zune is developed under Linux. It is however planned to be portable to other Unixes and, if possible, more or less easily portable for Windows and BeOS.
The project is 20% finished. This includes a good dozen key classes like Notify, Window, Group, Area, Text, Image and the dynamic loading of classes as well as other features.
The current source code can be downloaded as tgz archive from the homepage. On this page, you can find some screenshots of the GUI system.
A mailinglist is available from EGroups. Non-members have access to the archive, too. The list can be subscribed by sending an empty eMail to zune-subscribe@egroups.com or with the form on the bottom of the homepage.

CCC Press Release about MS Crypto API Backdoor
Press Information from Chaos Computer Club
Microsoft Operating Systems with builtin Backdoor:
Secure cryptography with Windows jeopardized
By detailed research with the WindowsNT operating system by an American Security Software developer, a massive software backdoor could be revealed in the operating systems Windows95, 98, NT and Windows 2000 (beta), which is likely dating back to an initiative by the US secret service NSA. This has a heavy impact on Microsoft's operating systems security.
After the initiatives of the American secret service NSA (National Security Agency) for worldwide communications control by means of internationally standarised regulation of encryption have suffered severe setbacks, now obviously it is attempted to reach the same goals by implementing backdoors in the American software products dominating the market. (Rest of the press release at the title link.)

I consider it a shame how US NSA (and German authorities, too!) violate the most basic civil rights "for the greater good". Even worse, they get away with spying on your eMail, your phone, your whatever, because they "are the good ones"... yeah, sure. (mb)

Kamil Iskra in c.s.a.p
gcc 2.95.1 for AmigaOS
Kamil Iskra has released the binaries of "gcc 2.95.1" for AmigaOS. They can be found on the GeekGadgets servers at amiga/m68k/alpha/misc/gcc-2.95.1-bin020.tgz (6.47 MB).
They are compiled for 68020+ CPUs, and can be loaded residently. The sourcecodes are available by anonymous login from the GeekGadgets CVS server.
With gcc version 2.95, the seperate branches of gcc and egcs are merged back together, so GeekGadgets again uses exclusively gcc.
Improvements have been made e.g. in register handling, so the previously common "fixed or forbidden register was spilled" error should be less frequent with this version.
More informations about gcc 2.95 are available at gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.95/features.html.

Met@box: Informations about amiJoe1200
Some time ago, we asked Met@box about some info about the amiJoe1200 board, and recieved the following eMail by Thomas Rudloff:

This is the latest Info, newer will surely surface in one or two weeks based on the latest developments.

Up to 143 times as fast as an original Amiga(TM) 1200 (calculated by Motorola specifications at 333 MHz)

That's the amiJoe...
- the amiJoe1200 is the ideal CPU-expansion to bring the Amiga(TM) 1200 to the PowerPC(TM) era.

This does the amiJoe1200
By using the powerful PPC750 (G3) CPU, the high-performance backside cache and the PCI bridge, the Amiga(TM) 1200 turns into a modern computer. Due to the integrated 68k emulation, current Amiga software stays usable, while PPC(TM) native programs can make use of the full speed advantage.
The RAM expansion to up to 512 MB is done with PC66 SO-DIMMs common to the laptop scene. Of course, the amiJoe1200 has a real-time clock.

With the historical connection, the long birth of Internet began." (Full article - German - at the title link.)

driver software for laser
Bytei & McScotty (Pascal & Rainer) write:
For about 6 years we run a small laser show rental. Our lasers are exclusively driven by Amigas (1200 50 MHz 10 MB 68030+Co). Sadly, our driver software leaves a lot to be desired! The developer of the software (Edward Skorus) has given us sourcecodes and rights. For a long time now we are looking for alternatives or someone able to expand the driver software. Is there someone among your readers who knows this stuff, or knows someone who knows?

Foundation News
A new update will be released ASAP. The last version 1.25 was not released because this update has been done for the new version 'Foundation Directors Cut', and was not fully compatible to the old 'Foundation' version. Paul Burkey works on the new Update 1.26 and is trying to make this update compatible with the old version, too. Moreover, Paul informs also that he is increasing his work on 'Foundation's Edge', and that this work is taking most of his time.

Because of that, only with our new products series

All customers, who have ordered a 400MHz G3 version in the preorder program, will receive a 400MHz G4 version of the CYBERSTORM or BLIZZARD G4 board at no extra cost. Customers of a 300MHz G3 version will receive a separate notification from us.

Collas out as Amiga president
According to ZDNet, Jim Collas is no longer president of Amiga.
Summary of the article:
Jim Collas leaves the company for personal reasons, and has registered his 118.000 stock shares for sale. Moreover it is reported that Gateway paid 13 million US-Dollar for 47 Amiga patents, and that Collas himself asked Gateway president Ted Waitt for the Job at Amiga. He moreover asked to run Amiga as a seperate company.
Tom Schmidt takes over the post from Collas. Before his joining Amiga, Schmidt has worked as General Manager for Allied Signal. He was not available for comment.
PS:
CNet also reports: Gateway's Amiga president jumps ship
The article states that Collas' leaving does not imply a change in plans, and the planned route will be continued by Schmidt.

Hello All,

I regret to inform that Bill McEwen told me as of
Tuesday he will no longer be under contract at
Amiga. Sigh.

I called him about some newsletter plans he had
in mind, only to receive yet another bit of
disappointing news.

Regards,
Fabian

FMdriver Update Version 1.12
Stefan Robl writes:
The FMdriver packet has been improved further:
All programs can now save in IFF format, too (8 as well as 24 bit). All problems with flicker or lines in small resolutions should be fixed, the FPS rate now looks much more stable, too. A serious bug has been removed that occured when there was no Prism24 module connected. The FMRecorder now offers several file formats, so it will work with every video software. Small changes and bugfixes.
